Christmas at Flaherty’s Barcelona
It’s the most marvellous time of the year! Yes, it’s that time again and we can’t wait to see you! If you are spending Christmas in Barcelona, you must come down to Flaherty’s for some good old Irish craic. Whether you are visiting family and friends, on holiday or an expat in Barcelona we can’t promise you a white Christmas, but we can promise a home away from home.
Keep reading below to find out a few of our favourite things to do during Christmas in Barcelona, and what we have going on during December. Christmas Day may be the main event, but we believe in having fun and having a drink every day!
Christmas Day in Barcelona
Coming over for Christmas Day itself and looking for a home away from home to enjoy Christmas with friends and family? Flaherty’s is your place. We have the most delicious homemade traditional Christmas Meal prepared for you. You can just sit back and enjoy your favourite peoples company while we serve you delicious food and drinks. And no washing up to be done either! Sounds good right? See our menu here.
Christmas Lights in Barcelona
Els Ilums de Nadal is pretty special in Barcelona with nearly 76 km of lights across the city. One light event you must see is the Mont Magica de Montjuic. Constructed by Carles Buigas for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, they put on a special light and water show for Christmas on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout December.
Christmas Shopping in Barcelona
Barcelona is a wonderful city to enjoy the festive period. And what better way to explore the city than by shopping! From the high-end stores on Passeig de Gracia to artisan markets and second-hand stores, you can find the perfect present for everyone.
We love the Fira de Sant Llucia market at the Catedral de Barcelona. This is the oldest market in the city and has over 300 stalls selling everything you need for decorating your tree, to handmade gifts.
Placa de Catalunya is worth seeing this time of year with the Christmas lights, and if you are really stuck for presents, El Corte de Ingles has seven floors of shopping heaven and a supermarket in the basement.
Flaherty’s Mulled Wine
After a hard day’s shopping, you deserve some home comforts. Come along to Flaherty’s to fortify yourself with our mulled wine and mince pies. Served every evening between 5 and 9 pm from 17 to 23 December, this is the perfect excuse to meet up with friends old and new to compare Christmas jumpers.
Traditional Christmas in Barcelona
Although not written for the period, the first part of Handel’s Messiah is about the birth of Christ and no Christmas would be complete without seeing a performance. Even if you are not a fan of Baroque music, the Messiah is something worth going to even once. And if this is your first Messiah, what better setting than the Santa Maria Del Mar church. The church is a beautiful example of Gothic Catalan construction from 1383, and there are two performances of the Messiah on 13 and 14 December.
Santa Maria Del Mar also has a Midnight Mass if you are looking for a Christmas Eve service. You will hear the famous El Cant de la Sibil, a Gregorian chant performed on Christmas Eve in Catalunya since the 10th century.
Christmas Parties at Flaherty’s
If you are looking for somewhere to throw the annual Christmas party, look no further than Flaherty’s. And it doesn’t have to be a work night out. Why not organise a pre-Christmas dinner with your friends? Our Christmas menu is available all month, including Christmas Day.
